Governor Signs Universal Background Check Bill

Governor Kate Brown today signed SB 941 which expands Oregon's gun sales background check requirements to include private sales with exemptions for transfers among family members and temporary transfers to hunting partners or at firing ranges.

Oregon House Passes Background Check Bill - SB 941

Today, the Oregon House of Representatives passed SB 941 to expand Oregon's existing background check requirements for gun sales to include private and internet sales with exemptions for transfers including family members, hunting partners, target practice, or to prevent eminent harm.  The bill also addresses mental health issues.  It authorizes a court to prohibit a person ordered to participate in assisted outpatient treatment from purchasing or possessing a firearm during the period of treatment.

The Oregon State Senate voted 17 - 13 to pass SB 941 to close the private sales loophole and require background checks on private sales of firearms including internet sales to help keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill.
