Oregon Senate passes bill to require background checks on private sales including internet sales

The Oregon State Senate voted 17 - 13 to pass SB 941 to close the private sales loophole and require background checks on private sales of firearms including internet sales to help keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill.

The bill includes exemptions for firearms transfers between family members and temporary loans for hunting and target shooting.  The bill also authorizes a court to prohibit a person ordered to participate in assisted outpatient treatment from purchasing or possessing a firearm during the period of treatment.
